FHA architects came up with the scheme to reinvigorate this important heritage public realm space that delivers the last view of Southwark Cathedral from the river Thames and the City.
Ashfield worked closely with the main contractor and architects throughout the contract to come up with acceptable proposals for the bespoke ‘love seats’, one of the outstanding features of this scheme. Made from polished granite, these seats have become a place to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the square. Ashfield also supplied our Ryecroft Riven Yorkstone, which was selected as it seamlessly links in with the reclaimed stone already in place. Portuguese silver grey granite steps, and Regal Portland cladding complete the look, whilst one of the last pieces left of the old London bridge was engraved by our masons with a message for all who walk over it.
This was a very pleasing project to be involved with, and with the materials used will no doubt be part of London’s heritage for many years.
